For Netflix, Matt Owens and Steven Maeda created the fantasy adventure television series One Piece (stylized in all caps). The show is a live-action adaptation of the continuing manga series of the same name created in 1997 in Japan by Eiichiro Oda, who also worked as a significant creative adviser for the project. Kaji Productions and Shueisha, who also publish the manga, are responsible for its production. Iaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar are featured in the series as the primary five Straw Hat Pirates.

Critics and viewers alike complimented the performances, plot, special effects, and overall adherence to the characters, plot, and worldbuilding from the original material after the series' August 31, 2023, premiere.It has been hailed as one of the greatest live-action anime adaptations, with several publications comparing it favorably to Netflix's earlier flops like the live-action adaptations of Cowboy Bebop and Death Note.

The series chronicles the exploits of the Straw Hat Pirates as they journey across perilous seas, hostile nations, and beyond in quest of the illusive "One Piece," a legendary treasure that will elevate their captain, Monkey D. Luffy, to the title of "King of the Pirates." However, the Marines are following their ship, and they are not the only team looking for the One Piece. The Straw Hats are equipped with abilities and a strong bond, making them prepared for the voyage and even more prepared to battle for their shared aspirations.

Casting

Iaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji were the principal actors representing the Straw Hat Pirates when a series of wanted posters were released in November 2021.

The following actors joined the cast of Koby in March 2022 on Netflix in recurring roles: Morgan Davies as Koby, Ilia Isorel's Paulino as Alvida, Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Jeff Ward as Buggy, McKinley Belcher III as Arlong, Vincent Regan as Garp, and Peter Gadiot as Shanks.

Langley Kirkwood, playing Captain Morgan, Celeste Loots, playing Kaya, Alexander Maniatis, playing Klahadore, Craig Fairbrass, playing Zeff, Steven Ward, playing Dracule Mihawk, and Chioma Umeala, playing Nojiko, were all added in June 2022. As Sham, Banchina, and Genzo respectively, Bianca Oosthuizen, Chanté Grainger, and Grant Ross joined the cast of the show in August 2022.

It was made public that Stevel Marc has been chosen to play Yasopp in February 2023. It was stated that Jandre le Roux has been chosen to play Kuroob in March 2023.

It was confirmed in July 2023 that the One Piece anime's original Japanese voice cast will provide the characters' voices for the Japanese dub. Except for Arlong, who is spoken by Hiroki Tchi in place of Jorta Kosugi from the anime for unknown reasons, all of the characters are dubbed by the original Japanese voice cast.

Budget

One Piece had a production budget of around $17.27 million each episode, or $138 million for the first season. Death Note reportedly cost $40 million, whereas Cowboy Bebop's estimated expenditures were between $6-7 million each episode, in compared to previous Netflix live-action adaptations. Only the fourth season of Stranger Things, at $270 million, apparently had a larger budget on Netflix than One Piece.Collider noted that One Piece had a higher budget than Apple's See and Disney's The Mandalorian, both of which "cost $15 million per episode," as well as higher per-episode budgets than HBO's House of the Dragon, Disney's WandaVision, and Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power ($20 million, $25 million, and $58 million, respectively).

Critical reaction

According to review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes, the series received favorable reviews from 53 reviewers, with an average score of 7.7/10. One Piece, according to the majority of its critics, "captures the essence of its popular original material with a pleasantly big-hearted adaptation that should amuse both devoted regulars and patient novices. The series has 21 reviews and a weighted average score of 67 out of 100 on Metacritic, which indicates "generally favorable reviews".
