9/11 (2017)

9/11 is a 2017 American action drama film that Martin Guigui and Steven Golebiowski wrote and directed. It is based on the theatrical play Elevator by Patrick James Carson, which is set during the New York City World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. On September 8, 2017, the movie, starring Charlie Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Gina Gershon, Luis Guzmán, and Jacqueline Bisset, was made available in the US. It continues to be Sheen's most current on-screen performance as of 2023.

PLOT

The Lower Manhattan skyline is seen in the opening scene of the movie early on September 11, 2001. Before starting his delivery route, Michael, a bicycle courier, bids his small daughter a happy birthday. Before going to the North Tower, where she works as an elevator dispatcher, Metzie is enjoying a coffee at a café. Billionaire trader Jeffrey Cage and his wife Eve are scheduled to meet at the North Tower's legal offices at 8:00 AM to finalize their divorce. At 8:46 AM, American Airlines Flight 11 crashes into the 93rd through 99th floors of the skyscraper, stopping Michael, Eve, and Jeffrey as they descend in an elevator. The elevator's technical components also malfunction, causing it to stop at the 38th floor. Eddie, a maintenance worker, and Tina, a lady who has come to the WTC to end her relationship with her affluent lover, are also in the elevator. They attempt to escape by opening the elevator doors, but they are unable because of a security locking mechanism.

Metzie informs the group through the elevator's public address system that the only way to save themselves is to force open the elevator door and send Eddie to the power room to rewire the elevator from the elevator dispatch center on the lower floors of the North Tower. The gang in the elevator starts to make preparations about how to force the door open. They attempt to open the emergency shaft above but are unsuccessful since it can only be done from the outside. At first, they try using their hands but it is jammed too securely.

Metzie explains to the group that the doors must be unbolted in order to be opened because the firemen are unable to reach the top floor. The elevator door is eventually forced open, Eddie uses a screwdriver to remove the locking mechanism, and they make their way into the janitor's area through a block of drywall. Only Eve manages to escape before the elevator descends owing to broken wires, preventing the others from fleeing through the hole. Before everyone in the elevator falls on their backs and braces for impact as the elevator starts to plummet, Jeffrey tells Eve that he loves her and makes a vow to meet in the lobby.Even though the elevator descends quickly to the lobby level, everyone is alive but hurt. Everyone exits the elevator except for Jeffrey, who is stuck inside the elevator as it descends, until Eve finds a firefighter to assist her in opening the door. As the North Tower comes down, the firefighter climbs to the top of the elevator, unlocks the emergency shaft, and calls out to Jeffrey.

Release

On July 21, 2017, the first trailer was published, drawing criticism. The collapse of the Twin Towers was employed as a ticking-time clock in the movie, according to Zack Sharf of Indie Wire, making it seem like "one of the most offensive films ever made."Additionally, The New York Daily News said that the teaser had been "called 'offensive' on social media.

Almost 16 years after the assaults, on September 8, 2017, the movie was released.

BOX OFFICE COLLECTION

MOVIE REVIEW

Based on 10 reviews with an average score of 2.6/10, the movie has a 20% approval rating on the review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes. The movie has received "generally unfavorable reviews," according to the weighted average score of 20 out of 100 on Metacritic, which is based on 4 reviews.

In a critical review for the movie, Kimber Meyers of the Los Angeles Times said, "9/11 trades on the emotional weight of its namesake day, manipulating audiences into feelings that have nothing to do with the mess that is actually on screen." The Hollywood Reporter's Frank Scheck stated in a similarly scathing assessment that 9/11 "proves so exploitative that its end credits' dedication to the victims and first responders feels tawdry".Although the movie ends with the words "Never Forget" emblazoned on the screen, Rich Juzwiak of Jezebel commented, "I won't, 9/11, but you've done your damnedest to make me want to."

Sixteen years later, 9/11 remains a delicate issue for a movie as inept as 9/11 to get completely right, according to Alonso Duralde of TheWrap, who also commended Gina Gershon and Jacqueline Bisset's performances. And while if the movie overly depends on the actual event's horrifying reality to give it credibility, the performances nonetheless have a sincere and well-deserved impact on the audience's emotions.
