One of the most well-liked K-dramas, Goblin, has been at the center of far too many debates. To learn more, keep reading.

Goblin, a Korean drama, is revered as a cult favorite among K-fans. The drama is renowned for its epic love story between a Goblin and a commoner who overcome every hurdle to be together. It boasts a stellar cast that includes Gong Yoo, Lee Dong Wook, Kim Go Eun, and Yoo In Na. But did you realize that this wildly renowned Korean romantic saga was dogged by numerous controversies?

Korean dramas are renowned for upping the adrenaline factor by introducing otherworldly beings to the audience, especially those from their folklore. Some of our favorite K-dramas depended heavily on their mystical themes, from Gumiho to Goblins to Mermaids to Aliens. The continuing drama "Destined With You," in which the lead actress is subject to the wrath of a 300-year-old hereditary curse, is a recent illustration of how much Koreans love to explore their past and make connections from earlier generations. Despite the fact that many people would find it strange, individuals who have been watching Korean dramas for some time weren't shocked.

Gong Yoo is a warrior who was stabbed on a sword years ago and has converted into an immortal with unlimited wealth in Goblin, based on Korean folklore about dokkaebi. Kim Go Eun, our heroine in need, is a motherless child who resides with her family. The female character, a high school student, can easily call the Goblin by extinguishing fires, which gives the drama's two leads a special bond. She falls in love with Goblin while blowing forth flames and calling him Ahjussi (uncle), and this particular scene was not well welcomed by Korean netizens.
Viewers were also upset by the lack of logic in the love tale between an 800-plus year old Goblin and a high school student. They also expressed displeasure that the drama capitalized on the Cinderella cliché in which a lady needs the help of a wealthy guy.

An other factor in Goblin's poor publicity was the show's overzealous corporate advertising. At one point, the producers were not even trying to be subtle and showed the male lead and his brother eating at the same restaurant over the course of several weeks, bragging about how it was the best food for the soul. While advertising campaigns for Korean dramas are nothing new, Goblin simply had too much going on for the users to be comfortable with.

In spite of the criticism, Goblin went on to receive the highest rating in K-dramas history and is still regarded as one of the all-time great love stories.

Goblin is available to stream on Netflix.
